Expressions In Dance has a wide variety of classes available to suit your child’s interests and skill level.

Mommy and Me

This class was established to allow hands on gross motor skill activities to be exchanged with children of the ages 1 up to 2. The class follows the basic principals concerning color, sound and symbol recognition inter twined with music, games and tumbling activities. This class is set on a 6 to 8 week structure and requires a limited number of participants. It does not teach a performance dance.

Basic Time Requirements: 1/2 hour (This does not have an opportunity to perform)

Beginning Variety

For adolescents between the ages 3 to 5. This class is based on gross motor skills and structured learning. The class is divided into three equal time frames. The first time frame allows for the students to play games and receive a brief introduction to ballet. Second time frame is tap. Students are allowed the opportunity to work on specific sounds and steps. The last section of class is an introduction to acrobatics. This is a basic tumbling class that incorporates trampoline, balance beam, hula hoops all while learning the fundamentals of tumbling. This class reinforces learning of numbers, colors, listening skills, good sportsmanship and of course dance. Each student is taught a performance dance to perform in June.

Advanced Variety

For adolescents between the ages of 4 and 6. This class moves past single gross motor skills and incorporates multi-tasking and fine motor skills. It also runs in a three evenly divided time frames. This allows for this age group to remain focused and enthusiastic during class. Ballet, Tap and Acrobatics are still the main focus for the division of class time with addition of Jazz and rhythm tap. Each student is taught a performance dance to perform in June.

Ballet

This style of dance is classified as an artistic dance performed as a theatrical entertainment, or an interlude, by a number of persons, usually women. Sometimes, a scene accompanied by pantomime and dancing. Each class has specific barre, center floor and traveling steps that will be taught. Expressions in Dance teaches teach a combination of three European styles. Ballet is the “backbone” of all dance training. In ballet the student will learn grace, elegance, technique, discipline, flexibility, stamina, and endurance. We strongly feel that ballet is the most important dance form that a child or adult can study. We offer Ballet for all ages and abilities.

Pointe

There is an age requirement and a level requirement to be placed in this class please see instructor for those requirements.

Basic Time Requirements: 1/2 hour individual class in combination with ballet level class

Pre Rec’s: This is an invitational class you must be invited by the instructor and you must be in a level two ballet minimum with a level three ballet. However may take more levels and maybe able to step into a level one ballet and work barre do to the lack of pointe classes available to our student base/you would be assessed only for 1/2 hour of class time. Your ballet technique classes must be separated ie.. these classes may not be on the same night.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is designed to help the dancer loosen up, gain rhythm, and have fun in an aerobic workout. Moves from MTV and other videos on TV with popular artists will be taught. This is a great way to get a good workout, have fun and gain confidence. This is an extra class that should be taken along with regular technique classes. It is not designed for the serious trained students as a main class.

Musical Theater

A fun class for all ages! Students learn basic theatrical, vocal and dance skills through skits, songs, and games.

Drill Team/Pom Pon

A high-intensity jazz/poms class with a focus on choreography, technique, and performance styles. Choreography integrates the use of poms and props. This is a great class for cheerleaders and future pom hopefuls.

Lyrical

A basic level definition is: Fitted dance to the lyre; hence, also, appropriate use of a lyric song; — said especially of poetry style which expresses the individual emotions. This class requires the student to be in a ballet classes at least one year prior entry. This class may require different types of shoes to be worn in preparation for the performance. Usually this class is for a mature dancer because it requires so much emotional aptitude. Lyrical is a fluid form of dance done to popular ballads and slower contemporary music. The dancer is taught to interpret his or her movement with feeling, motion and style. They will learn to tell a story or create the picture of the song. This style combines the fluid beauty of ballet with the more sharp moves in jazz. A Ballet or Jazz class is recommended along with lyrical to build in technique.

Jazz

Jazz is sharp and fluid movements to create a visually technical dance and style. It is usually done to popular music. Body isolation’s, stretch, turning, leaping and technical steps are taught in this class.

Tap

Tap is one of the oldest dance forms in this country. Students are taught rhythms, timing, and leg/foot coordination done to various types of music. Students will receive well-rounded knowledge of all types of tap either it be rhythm, classic or Irish.

Acrobatics

This is all mat work. It will compliment cheer and drill team and create flexibility and strength in dancers. Paced for a students abilities; each student progresses at different levels. There are some division on skill which is represented by levels but mainly it is based on the individual students performance. Techniques that will be taught are as basic as a forward roll to a full back twist. (this class does not perform in the recital)

Modern

This style teaches the body to move as an expressive tool; body/spatial/sensory awareness, structures and alignment, stage presence and gesture.

Leaps and Turns

This is a class designed specifically for the serious dancer who wishes to perfect and refine their skills of turning, jumping, and leaping. These classes are taught with an emphasis on technique and correct body placement. They are taught in a progressive manner beginning with the basics and advancing to higher level skills and combination’s of those skills. Each student works on an independent basis allowing for advancement at their own pace.

Note:

Older (12) students and non competitive students coming one day per week are considered a more recreational student. Skills will continue to be taught and all subjects will be performed in the spring recital. If your child has many activities and cannot devote his or her time to more extensive training those classes still are available to your dancer. It is important that every student feels as if their class fits their needs and addresses their accomplishments.
